One day in Tossa de Mar
A day trip from Barcelona to Tossa de Mar: a calm beach under the medieval walls, a rough shore on the other side, and pines on the cliffs until dusk.

We were staying in Barcelona, and one summer day my friends and I took a day off from the city to visit Tossa de Mar, up the Costa Brava. We chose it because it is a beautiful, calm town, with a nice beach and a castle.
The calm side
It was a hot, sunny summer day and the sea in the bay was calm. Parasols on the sand, the green hill behind, buoys in red, white and yellow lying on the beach, and mopeds parked right on the sand by the water.
At the end of the beach, the Hotel Cap d'Or sits under the medieval walls and towers of the old village, its terrace full of red parasols. No story there, it is simply pictorial: a narrow street drops down to it, with the sea and the buoys at the bottom of the frame.
In the medieval village, red roses climb an old stone house, and the evening light turns it all warm.
The aggressive side
Walk a little out of the bay and everything changes. On the opposite side, the shore was quite aggressive: waves breaking hard in the rocky coves, under pine branches. Same day, same sun, a completely different sea.
On the cliffs, pines grow straight out of the rock and lean over the water, and an aloe was flowering in red above the dark blue sea. As the sun went down, the pines turned gold, and at dusk the steepest cliff and its leaning pine became one silhouette against the sea.
Photographer's notes
Many of the coast pictures are taken from behind the pine branches, letting the trees frame the sea. In town, a narrow street does the same job, with the water only at the end.
